Two years ago we lost a nephew & cousin, we speak your name with fond memories.

My parents had 12 grandchildren -6 boys and 6 girls, that link has been broken.

We always enjoyed following your racing, but not that day 2 years ago.

2nd of October would have been your 34th Birthday Mark, I can remember the day you were born.

Rest in Peace- Ally, Tony, James, Natalie & Ben

Message from Adrienne Koenig -

Message from Adrienne Porter - Wife, best friend and soulmate
To all those who have left your condolences, we thank you. Mark was the most amazing husband, father and friend. He chased his dreams and was courageous, strong, loyal and ambitious. He continues to live on in our 3-year-old son, Flynn who misses him terribly. To have lost him doing something he loved is of some consolation, but to have lost the greatest thing that ever happened to me is a pain that will never subside. For those who may still be unsure, this is what unfolded on that dreadful day, one I will never forget as long as I live. After blowing an o-ring on his engine, his car began to lose oil, dripping on the track and hence him losing control of his car and thrusting him into the wall. Mark did not at any point ever remove his racing harness. Thank you for your thoughs, they touch our hearts... Adrienne

Optima Sport, an official team of the 2006 Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series, would like to thank those who have expressed their best wishes to the team and its driver David Clark, following the tragic racing accident at Bathurst on October 6.

The team is pleased to report that Clark’s outlook remains encouraging following his recent transfer to an Adelaide hospital by Wingaway Medical Flights where he will remain for the duration of his recovery.

The team at Optima Sport convey their deepest sympathy to the family of Mark Porter. Msport Racing, the team built by Mark was a shining light in the Fujitsu V8 category, and much admired in setting the benchmark for presentation and professionalism. It’s a tribute to Mark that every time his team arrived in pit paddock, there was envy from competing teams. It is heart warming to know that despite on-track competitiveness, both the Optima and Msport crews were welcome into each others pits and workshops when assistance was required.

Optima Sport wishes to pay gratitude to the regulations and safety measures provided to the sport by V8 Supercars Australia, the Touring Car Entrants Group of Australia (TEGA), and the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS). The team continues to provide open access to the regulatory bodies regarding chassis inspection and on-board data transcripts. It is the team's intention to assist in any measures keeping V8 Supercars at the leading edge of driver safety.

The magnitude of the accident has resulted in structural damage and deformation evident in many areas of the roll cage and floorpan. The car is considered “not repairable” for future competition use.

Optima Sport will shortly begin a new build program to replace the written-off race car at its Surfers Paradise workshop. The team’s thanks go out to the Ford Motor Company for their compassion in these difficult times, and the race teams and trade suppliers who have come forward to assist in getting the team back on its feet.

While Optima Sport will not contest the final round of the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series at Phillip Island on 8-10 December, the team encourages all race fans to get trackside or tune in to watch the action. Optima Sport wishes all drivers a safe and successful final event for 2006.

Message from Trevor Nielsen - Business Associate

To the Porter Family

We were extremely saddened by the news of Mark’s passing on and having been at the track during the accident witnessed a group of people who were obviously close to Mark that were deeply worried for several days, like myself, and upset at the outcome.

Having only known Mark for a couple of years, I can understand the enormous amount of support and condolences your family would be receiving as he had the utmost respect from everyone who had ever met him and stood out as an honorable businessman and loving Father, Husband and Son.

Mark’s strong and determined personality rewarded him well which is obvious from his achievements in business and the sport he loved. We also benefited from his efforts and are greatful that he chose us as a partner in the Hyundai Construction Equipment business in Australia.

Mark will be sadly missed by us all, please accept our sincere condolences on your loss.

Message from Anne - work collegue

for those we love
is self indulgent

to live a little better for
having known them
gives purpose to their life -

Mark when I first met you, you were about Flynns age, - and I know how proud of your son you were,  my condolences to Adrienne

PS I will miss your last minute phone calls (because you forgot to email me)

Message from auto trader -
Australasian motor racing lost one of its true gentlemen when former Hamiltonian Mark Porter died in Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital last Sunday.

Porter, who had recently turned 31, suffered severe injuries to his head, neck and body in an accident two laps from the end of the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Development Series race at Bathurst on Friday afternoon.
His Holden Commodore clipped a trackside wall, spun and ended up broadside-on, stranded in the middle of the track.

Young Sydney driver David Clark arrived on the scene at an estimated 180km/h, threw the car sideways to brush off as much speed as possible, but ploughed into the stricken Holden. The driver’s door and the rollcage of Porter’s car were crushed by the impact and he had to be cut from the wreckage.

Both drivers were airlifted to Bathurst base hospital and then transferred, Clark to Nepean Hospital and Porter to Royal Prince Alfred where he was put on life support.

Porter’s death was announced in a statement from his family two hours after the end of the Bathurst 1000.
Clark underwent surgery, was put into a medically-induced coma, and has since regained consciousness. He is now out of intensive care and is expected to make a full recovery. He will be in hospital for six to eight weeks.

Mark Porter’s motor racing career began in earnest with a Mazda RX7 Batmobile, built to contest the NZ Super GT series. He had been around racing for several years before that, accompanying his truck racing father Robin. The Porter family runs the Hamilton-based Porter Hire and Eagle Spares heavy equipment businesses.

Mark raced in GT events in Japan and New Zealand before moving into the highly-competitive TraNZam Sports Sedan championship in New Zealand, first racing a Chevrolet Camaro and then a Ford V8-powered Jaguar XKR.

Hydraulink livery appeared on both TraNZam cars and carried over on to Porter’s Australian racers.
Auto Trader, Deals on Wheels sister publication at ACP Media, was also involved in sponsoring Porter in NZ racing.

From 2002 he had concentrated on the Australian V8 Supercar development series in which he was a consistent front-runner.

He finished fourth in the 2002 series, third in 2003 and 2004 and ninth in 2005. This year he was running third.

Porter and his wife Adrienne moved to Australia’s Gold Coast two years ago and Porter’s thrust to carve out a future in V8 Supercar racing went into high gear. They have a one-year-old son, Flynn.

Porter was one of the most likeable drivers in motor racing, popular with his rivals, quietly-spoken, modest and always approachable. On-track he was fast, hard-working and sportsmanlike.

This thoroughly professional, gentlemanly man will be sorely missed.

Deals on Wheels Magazine and the wider ACP Trader Group businesses extend their deeply-felt sympathies to Mark’s immediate family and to his many friends.

Church Overflows For Porter's Funeral
14/10/2006 07:58 AM

Rock music, racing colours and recollections marked the funeral for New Zealand driver Mark Porter on Friday.

A crowd of more than 300 - some dressed in the colours of Porter's racing teams - overflowed from the Church of Saint Peter in Hamilton.

Porter, 31, died on Sunday afternoon, two days after being hit in a horror crash in a at Bathurst in New South Wales.

At the service hymns were replaced by rock music and Porter's one-year-old son Flynn played round his father's coffin during eulogies, The Waikato Times reports.

Porter's brother Simon spoke of Mark's competitive nature in everything from motorsports to video games.

"I know the following doesn't sound like loving brothers, but I have chased him down the street with a pitch fork.

"He'd be laughing his tits off, knowing he got me again."

The Porter family thanked those who had expressed their sympathy but reserved a special thought for the racing fraternity.

"We thank them all, but we particularly thank the race teams. Highly competitive on track you may be, but your support at this time is evidence of the very close bond between all those in the motor sport community.

"He has gone from our lives, but not from our hearts."

Message from adam joseph - v8 race fan

I didnt know Mark personally, nor did I ever meet him but I was a keen follower of the development series and always enjoyed watching Mark race, he was a great driver and came across as a very nice guy.

My heart really sunk when I heard of his passing. We can say that like Peter Brock and Steve Irwin, Mark died doing what he loved to do. To Marks family, I send my deepest condolences. I feel particuarly sad for Mark's son, it must be really hard for him.

 Rest In Peace Mark Porter.

Message from V8 Supercars -
The family of Mark Porter conveys its appreciation to all those who have sent flowers and expressions of condolence and sympathy following Mark’s death. Your messages of shared loss and grief have been a comfort to us.

Those gifts – of flowers and words – were from friends who were close to him, from the motor racing fraternity and from people who did not know Mark personally. We thank them all, but we particularly thank the race teams. Highly competitive on track you may be, but your support at this time is evidence of the very close bond between all those in the motor sport community.

We are comforted to know that the qualities that we loved so much in Mark were recognised by so many.

He has gone from our lives, but not from our hearts.

The Family of Mark Porter

Message from Trace Stenberg - V8 fan

To Marks wife, my thoughts of  love and courage are with you at this time, cause it is so hard to carry on after losing the one you love.

To Mark, thank you for the pleasure you gave us fans, I'm so sorry it was for such a short time.

So many thoughts, so few words

Message from David Hazell - Friend & Colleague
I only had the pleasure of knowing Mark for a relatively short period of time, however because of Mark's personal attributes he somehow left a deep impression on me as an individual. I believe that this was because of his open, friendly and modest persona, always with an encouraging word in any situation, making you feel immediately like part of his family in a way I am unable to explain in words. I also admired Mark as a man who with seemingly effortlessly was able to move mountains.. just taking every challenge in his stride... no one challenge to big to overcome and no one issue too small to ignore. Mark was a gentleman and an inspiration, I will be eternally grateful for having known him as a friend and as a business colleague. His loss is deeply felt amongst us here in Tasmania. One behalf of our customers, the Hazell Brothers family and Onetrak Equipment we send this tribute.

Message from Andrew & Jayne / Barry Luxton - Friend / Business associate

Mark - You will be missed by all of us. Your a great bloke, and in the short time I have known you i am glad our life's have crossed paths. I still cant believe what has happened. Rest in Peace.

Message from Craig LANE - Fan of motor racing

To Mark's family and extended family and friends

I am a 43 year old Policeman from Victoria, Aust., and have been following Bathurst and car racing since I was 10.  I see road trauma all the time and have to deliver death messages as part of my job.  It is the part of the job no policeman can be trained for.  To see two great Australians in Steve Irwin and Peter Brock pass away in one week and then with all the ceremony at Bathurst due to the passing of Peter Brock was bad enough.  For this tragedy to occur at Bathurst puts life into perspective.  Go and live life to the full and do the best you can possibly do.  I have had a knee operation and have been off work for eight weeks due to a football (Aussie rules) injury.  The pain I went through is nothing compared to the pain Mark's family will have for the rest of their lives. I hope his young child will grow up knowing how well loved his father was and how much he meant to the motor racing fraternity.

Thanks for the opportunity to send this.

Craig LANE

To Marks family and friends,

Our deepest sympathy for your loss.

As a part time racer myself I totally understand the love and the passion that Mark would have had for the sport.

He was able to follow his dreams and compete in a sport he loved.  You must be so proud.

Best wishes,

Mark... Your place in history has been set, while doing the job you loved the best, your style and form was from the heart, you gave 100% from the start, we will never forget the man, the life, the face, and beleive, along with Brock, youre at a better place. RIP

Our thoughts are with family and friends

Message from Ange Nicholls - Fan

Two things in life are a certainty, we live, we die. I believe we all meet again in some way.  Whilst here with family and friends we must fulfill our pleasures and live our dreams. Mark has done that alright. Think not of the loss as i believe you will meet again and remeber the joy he has brought to all your lives and those of his fans. In this physical world he lives in our memories, in the spiritual world he resides.

I wish you all peace and calm.

Message from Matt C - Just a fan

Mark, you'll be sadly missed mate by your fellow drivers and fans. You left us doing what you loved best, showing the Ford guys how its done!!

Youve showed us all that we're not invincible and hopefully this message sticks with people on the roads, that sadly thats how easy it is for things to go wrong.

I'll never forget Bathurst this year, after paying my respects to Brock on Saturday I then had an eerie feeling as I passed your truck on its way home early, a sight I'll remember for years to come.

Mark, I know your now in Heaven with Pete. Make sure your first question is "what lap times the old bugger set".

Message from Aeron Napper - Race Fan
Its such a shock that this has happened, and I feel for Marks friends and family. Everyone will remember the year that Brock left us, Lowndes won Bathurst and Mark Porter passed away. It will stay with me for ever.

Message from Jason Cole - Motor Sport Fan

I've only had the pleasure of seeing Mark racing around the tracks, So it's with great sadness that I say my family and I are sorry to hear the news of Mark's passing.

I was looking at the posters on my son's wall the other day and he has one of Mark Porter racing around the track. And then it made me think. Although Mark is no longer with us, there are still plenty of memories of him around in videos and photos. So, although they will never replace the man himself, we can all still watch him doing what he loved doing.

Jason Cole.

Message from Paul Manuell -

Message from Stuart Glass - None

Words cannot convey the sadness I feel at your loss.  I have the greatest respect for the drivers of the cars who risk it all.  We cannot always understand the reason why such things happen but we need to hold on to the fact there is a reason for everything.  Out of tragedy will come safety changes to ensure other drivers are better protected.

Deepest Sympathy... Stuart Glass

Message from Jed and the rest -

I'm just a fan. Heck what do I do except pay my money and watch what happens. Mark gave his life this sport. I just dunno what to say or how to say it ... there are a few fellas here with me and we'd all like to pass on our support to Adrienne, young Flynn and the rest of the family.

Message from David Sullivan - Grandstand fan

Over the years Mark has entertained me as a spectator in many forms of motor racing. Although I never had any long conversations with Mark he always said hello and was easy to approach. He will be missed. My thoughts go to his family and friends at this hard time.

David Sullivan

Message from Nigel Karl - V8 FAN

Mark, you will be sadly missed by not only your friends, family and fans in New Zealand , but also from Australia.

I was lucky enough to meet Mark at Pukekohe and he was then happy enough to stop and chat to a complete stranger. To me that showed the true sprit of motor racing.

Even the barriers of the Blue Team v the Red Team are pushed aside when a driver is taken away from all of us so tragically - by him doing what we all enjoy to watch - Motorcar Racing.

I would like to express my sorrow to the family of Mark - Mum & Dad - Robin and Robyn - Wife Adrienne and their son Flynn.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you all in you time of grief.

Someone who you didn't know - but someone who will miss a great Son / Husband / Dad & Race car driver.
