A new journey begins
Maori Queen, Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu, began a new journey earlier this evening as her people gathered to honour, mourn and celebrate the life of one of Maoridom's most influential figures.

Only two weeks after her 75th birthday and the celebration of the 40th anniversary of her coronation in May, Dame Te Ata surrendered her spirit with the blessing of her whanau and the aroha of a nation.

Dame Te Ata was admitted to Waikato Hospital after a heart attack a month ago and was later discharged to her home at Turangawaewae Marae where she died at 5.32pm.

"She was surrounded by her children, grandchildren and kaumatua," a statement released by the family said.

Recognised by many as a model of humility, Dame Te Ata was deeply grateful for the time she had been given and the honours bestowed on her.

Through failing health and in a final address which she struggled to deliver at the 40th anniversary of her coronation she said:

"I can't find words to express my gratitude. If I could find all the most beautiful words, I would put them together and lay them among you, to help me with my thoughts of affection."

Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu, was born on July 23, 1931 and died on August 15, 2006.

Kia Orana mama, Just recently I had the pleasure of entering a marae and seeing your portrait on the wall over our beds took me back to the day you passed, I was still at school, I didn't know who you were but I was still overwhelmed with sadness. It wasn't 'til that recent encounter that I found myself wanting to know more about you, The lady with the captivating smile :) All the support and love you've given to our Maori people, all the work you did with grace and humility, really touched me. You're not only my inspiration but also one of my biggest role models<3 You make me so proud to be half Maori you've inspired me to learn more about our beautiful culture and appreciate both sides of my family, for that I am truly thankful <3 Rest in love dear lady, continue to watch over your family and friends, as well as the whole of your people, even though it has been a long while since your passing, know that you are still very much loved and missed, xoxo Maggie

Kia ora our queen.. I hope you are sleeping well, despite all the raruraru going on lately. I never knew you personally but my grandparents have been very staunch supporters of the movement for the past few years and I have come to respect the kaupapa of the Kingitanga and appreciate all the hard mahi you, your son and our tipuna before us have done. Christmas day has just passed and very soon a new year will begin. There has been much chatter about our current Kingi, your son Tuheitia.. Many people are constantly comparing him to you and criticize him for his mistakes. People fail to see before your death, he was just an ordinary man, with a family, a career, a life outside of the world of Kingitanga. This was all changed in an instant, as it would have for you when you were made our Arikinui. I know he's not perfect but I want you to know I will always support your son, our Kingi and the Movement which many of our tipuna and people have bled and died for. I know you are watching over him and our people.. People of Waikato, Kingitanga and Maoritanga. Our kaupapa of Kotahitanga will endure any obstacles and continue on it's path to an everlasting legacy!! Rest easy my Queen.. Arohanui xOx.
