Dedicated and loved

John and I learned to play bridge in the old air raid warden's underground bunker at St Martins Church ... Alan Moss

JOHN Eldridge, died suddenly of a  massive heart attack on Saturday, October 21, 2006 in Wellington.
Beloved husband and soul mate of Nola and dearly loved father and father-in-law of Rachel, Michael and Shonagh, he was also `dearly loved John' of Eden, Alana and Craig. He was the loved brother and brother-in-law of Mary, Maurice and Jean and the late Howard, all of England.
He was the dearly loved friend of Lyn, Christopher and Brendon.
A celebration of John's life will be held at the War Memorial, Marine Parade, Napier, on Friday, October 27, 2006, at 11.00am, followed by a private cremation. In lieu of flowers donations to St John Ambulance Transport Division may be left in the entrance to the War Memorial or posted to P O Box 5118, Greenmeadows, Napier.

A Bridge Tribute
John (lovingly dubbed NZ's Mr Bridge) is deeply mourned by a shocked New Zealand Contract Bridge community, many of whom were gathered at Hamilton Congress at Labour Weekend when the news hit. The loss is sad but what a joy he was in life.
Anyone who plays bridge  from Wellington to Cape Reinga  to Invercargill has had his guiding hand at major events and will remember him as one of New Zealand's best known and respected directors.
Nothing was too much trouble for John and his wicked sense of humour diffused many a tense suituation.
There is a huge gap in all our bridge lives that will be very hard to fill.

Message from Nola Eldridge - Wife
Nola, Rachel, Michael, Shonagh, Eden, Alana and Craig wish to express our most sincere and heartfelt thanks for the expressions of condolence at John's sudden and untimely passing. The warmth shown has been a great support to us all. The Eldridge family in and from the U.K. warmly join their thanks to these.

Message from Annette & Stephen Henry - Friend

Our sincere condolences to you and the family for the untimely passing of John.

His humour, good nature and practical approach made him a great guy and one of the very best directors. His directing work at 1994 PABF in Wellington was second to none.

We will miss him.

Love, Annette & Stephen

Message from Maurice Eldridge - Brother

I saw this on the wall of a café in Taupo two days ago and thought of my Bruv. – Maurice

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well-preserved and attractive body. Rather to skid in sideways, no money left, beer in one hand and a good woman in the other. Body thoroughly used up, totally worn out; and screaming;

WOW what a ride ! ! !”

Message from Anthony and Kathy Ker - friend

Our thoughts are with you at this sad time.  John is remembered for his humour, thoughtfulness and his enjoyment of Bridge.   No matter how busy he always had time to stop and chat.

His obvious enjoyment he passed onto others and he will be sorely missed.

All our love

Kathy and Anthony Ker

Message from Dean Sole - Bridge Friend

So sorry to hear of John's passing.

A true gentleman with one of the best demeanours at the table, who always had time to resolve any issues I brought to him.

Love to all his nears and dears.

Dean Sole
